CHARACTERS
Marin Miroyu - a modest cosmography teacher at a provincial town high school. Passionate about science, he is sure that he has discovered a new star.
Mona - a sophisticated, spoiled, slightly naive beautiful girl, a socialite.
Grieg - Mona's lover. Rich, cynical, self-confident.
Mr. Udrya - a music teacher, a friend of Marin. He wrote a symphony, for the performance of which one instrument is missing, without which he does not want to perform it.
Mademoiselle Kuku - a strict class mistress, Marin's colleague.
Mr. Ispas - the station master.
PLOT
Romania, 1920s. In a provincial town where passersby greet everyone they meet, and residents attach exaggerated importance to what their neighbors think of them, an extraordinary event occurs - a diesel-electric train, the Bucharest-Sinaia express, which usually passes through here without stopping, stops late in the evening at the train station. The express was stopped by the train conductor to let off a ticketless passenger named Mona, who is traveling to Bucharest. She is dressed in a luxurious dress and hat, and has nothing in her pockets except casino chips.
By a twist of fate, at the same time at the station she meets Marin Miroiu, a cosmography teacher at the local gymnasium. He came to pick up a rare book that had been delivered to him - Marin believes he has discovered a new star, and so, for the enormous sum of 22,000 lei, he purchased a rare catalog to prove the primacy of his discovery.
The teacher offers the stranger a place to stay overnight in his house, a bachelor's haven, while he himself plans to spend the night with his friend, the music teacher Udri. She agrees. However, left alone with him, Mona becomes convinced that this seemingly ordinary teacher is an interesting person, and she looks for an excuse not to let Marin go. Mona learns Marin's secret - he tells her about a star he has discovered that is not included in any star catalog. They are both happy together on this starry night.
Meanwhile, Mona is sought out by her rich lover, Grieg, who finds her in the squalid teacher's house. Mona expresses a desire to stay there forever. Marin believes that after the events of the previous night, he, as an honest man, is obliged to marry Mona. However, Grieg, with his cold, cynical arguments, convinces the spoiled and capricious Mona that she has no place in the provinces, as the "wife" of a poor teacher. They leave the town together.
Marin is left alone with the truth he has learned from his astronomical observations: "Not a single star deviates from its path."
