PLOT
Eighth-grader Seva Mukhin, nicknamed Mukha, is interested in music and is learning to play the drums. He watches, mesmerized, from behind the glass, a jazz band rehearsal at a local club and wants to join the band too. But so far, his music has earned him criticism from his older brother, Andrey, a basketball player, and his neighbor, Stakan Stakanych, a hairdresser who tries to scrap his drums in Seva's absence.

Seva also likes a girl in their class, the beautiful Ira Fyodorova. They are friends, but their relationship is far from ideal: they quarrel and then make up. Seva is also jealous of Ira's relationship with a certain Valery, whom she says knows everything, even "where a grasshopper's ears are."

During the summer holidays, Seva manages to gather like-minded people and form a musical group. Then he goes to summer camp. Meanwhile, Ira visits their classmate Bulkin (Baton) and tells him she's leaving because her military father is being transferred to Murmansk. Ira touchingly informs Mukha of this in a letter, after which he walks to the city train station, where, realizing he's late, he runs after the train carrying Ira.
